Introducing TAPPI T511 – Industrial Physics

TAPPI T511 is an industrial testing method to identify the folding endurance of paper using an MIT tester.

TAPPI is the technical arm of the American Paper & Pulp Association (APPA), and it gathers and disseminates information concerning production matters.

Folding endurance tests have been used to estimate the ability of paper to withstand repeated bending, folding, and creasing. Folding endurance testing is useful for measuring the deterioration of paper as it ages.

Whatever the material type, the simple method is the same – your sample is repeatedly folded on both sides at a set folding rate until it’s severed at the crease.

The importance of flexibility testing

Testing the flexibility of your packaging with tests like the folding endurance test is a must if you want to know how it will respond to transport, handling and shelf life. The right test and measurement solution will help you work out the type of materials and the configuration you should use. Flexibility testing allows you to protect your products at a low cost.

TAPPI MIT folding endurance testing

This TAPPI testing method recommends the use of the MIT folding endurance tester to determine the flexibility of paper. An exhaust fan arrangement maintains the folding head at room temperature.

The MIT tester is suitable for papers of any thickness; however, if the outer fibrous layers of paper are thicker than about 0.25mm (0.01in.) rupture during the first few folds, the paper folding test loses its significance.

A different folding endurance test using Schopper-type testing apparatus is provided through TAPPI T423.
