Introducing TAPPI T 826 – Industrial Physics

TAPPI T 826 is a TAPPI international testing method to determine the edgewise compressive strength of containerboard samples.

This TAPPI testing method is for containerboard testing of samples with a span-to-thickness ratio of five or less. This is equivalent to a grammage of between 100g/m2 and 440g/m2.

TAPPI T 826 compressive strength testing apparatus

To perform a successful TAPPI T 826 edgewise compression strength test you’ll need a couple of pieces of apparatus, which we will happily supply!

  • Compression tester – it needs two clamps with stationary and moveable jaws to grip your corrugated sample. The corrugated board compression tester should also have a means for measuring the maximum compressive strength.
  • Cutting device – a precision die cutter is preferred.

TAPPI T 826 compressive strength testing process

This TAPPI T 826 edgewise compressive strength test involves gripping your sample between two clamps and crushing them together until a compression failure occurs. The maximum force that caused the box to fail is measured.

Why is TAPPI T 826 compressive strength testing important?

It’s important to understand the edgewise compressive strength capability of your containerboard. It’s one of the main factors affecting the overall compressive strength of a container.

If you know the cross-directional short span compressive strengths of the linerboard and the medium, then you can predict the compressive strength of the corrugated board in its final boxed form.
