Introducing TAPPI T414 – Industrial Physics

TAPPI T414 is a TAPPI international testing standard that measures the force required to tear multiple sheets of paper through a specified distance using an Elmendorf-type tearing tester.

It’s a TAPPI testing approach that’s designed to evaluate the internal tearing resistance of paper using the Elmendorf-type testing method.

How to test to TAPPI T414 tear testing standards

When you’re strength testing to TAPPI T414 standards you can tear and inspect multiple sheets of your sample together through a fixed distance, using the pendulum of an Elmendorf-type tearing tester. The effort exerted in tearing is measured by the loss in the potential energy of the pendulum.

The Elmendorf-type test isn’t suitable for single-ply tear testing and it doesn’t measure edge-tear resistance. However,  the results can easily be used to calculate the approximate tearing resistance of a single sheet.

The amount of sample necessary for your tear test is highly dependent on the tear properties of the sample. A sample with low tear strength will require more than a sample with a higher tear strength.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your TAPPI T414 tear strength testing?

Elmendorf tear tester 83-76

Designed and built by our popular materials inspection brand, Testing Machines Inc, this automatic, digital tear tester is just what you need for accurate elmendorf testing. It’s equipped with an optical encoder that measures the angular position of the pendulum which converts to tear strength units.

Another great feature is the large, full-color touchscreen display. It includes intuitive, easy-to-use software that provides a revolutionary new approach to tear testing and data review.
