ISO 9895 is an ISO international crush testing method that’s used to test the compressive strength of paper and board using a short-span compression tester.
This ISO testing approach is designed for crush testing papers and boards to be used in the manufacture of containers and boxes. This cardboard box testing standard is recommended for papers and boards with a grammage from 100 g/m2 to 400 g/m2.
To carry out a short span compression test using the ISO 9895 method and a compression tester then you’ll first need to clamp your test piece between two clamps. These crush testing clamps are forced towards each other until a compressive failure occurs. The maximum force during the compression test is measured and the compressive strength is calculated.
There are a few definitions within ISO 9895 that you’ll need to understand to perform a successful short span compression test, these include:
Compressive strength: the maximum compressive force per unit width that a test piece of paper or board can withstand until the onset of failure. The compressive strength is expressed in kilonewtons per meter.
Compressive index: the compressive strength divided by the grammage.

Compressive tester: with two clamps for holding a test piece 15 mm wide. Each compression tester clamp includes a stationary jaw and a movable jaw. The crush test clamps have a high-friction surface and should be able to hold the test piece in position with a constant clamping force of 2 300 ± 500 N. They’re designed to grip the test piece firmly over its full width.
Cutting device: designed to produce short span compression testing sample pieces of the required dimensions with clean and parallel edges.
