ISO 5267/2 is a global ISO testing standard that follows the Canadian Standard freeness method to determine the drain ability of pulp suspensions in water.
The whole of the ISO 5267 freeness of pulp testing standard is focused on determining the drain ability of pulps. It contains two separate parts:
Part two of ISO 5267 deals with the Canadian standard freeness test which you can use for freeness testing of all kinds of pulp in aqueous suspension.
The Canadian Standard freeness test was designed to provide a measure of the rate at which a dilute suspension of pulp is dewatered under specified conditions.
It’s been shown that drainability is related to the surface conditions and swelling of the fibers. So, this freeness of pulp test offers a useful index of the amount of mechanical treatment to which the pulp has been subjected.
The rate at which a suspension dewaters depends on the conditions of measurement, particularly the geometric characteristics of the instrument.
To prepare a successful ISO 5267/2 Canadian standard freeness test report you’ll need to include the following information as a minimum:
To carry out a successful ISO 5267/2 Canadian standard freeness test you’ll need the following kit:
Canadian Standard freeness tester: with a drainage chamber and a rate-measuring funnel, mounted on a suitable support. These are described in some detail in the annexes of the ISO 5267/2 testing documents.
Measuring cylinders: calibrated in milliliters, capable of measuring volume with an error less than 1,0 ml for volumes up to 100 ml; an error less than 2,0 ml for volumes between 100 ml and 250 ml; and an error less than 5,0 ml for volumes above 250 ml.
Weighing balance: capable of reading accurately to 0,01 g.
Standard water: for physical testing.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 5267/2 freeness of pulp testing?
Messmer Büchel Schopper-Reigler Freeness Tester 33-29
The Schopper-Riegler Freeness Tester 33-29 will accurately determine how quickly any diluted pulp solutions will drain.
Brought to you by Messmer Büchel, our paper inspection specialist brand, our Schopper Riegler freeness tester 33-29 reliably determines the rate of drainage and expresses it in a Schopper Riegler (SR) value.
Are you involved in paper making? When you need to make consistently high-quality sheets, careful examination of the surface conditions and swelling of the fibers is important. The good news is, our Schopper Riegler freeness tester 33-29 helps you to achieve freeness of pulp testing perfection.
We’ve learnt a thing or two about freeness of pulp testing over the decades. Now Industrial Physics is recognized as a brand that likes to bring new, innovative freeness testers and freeness of pulp testing equipment to market.
We like to share our knowledge and we’re here to help you to answer your questions about thickness testing. Across the knowledgebase section of our website we publish lots of blogs on related subjects.

Canadian Standard Freeness Tester determines the rate of drainage of a dilute pulp suspension and express it in terms of freeness. The rate of drainage is related to the work done on the fibre during beating or refining. Two models are offered: Wall mounted (brass), and stand model (stainless steel).
