Introducing ISO 5084 – Industrial Physics

ISO 5084 is an international ISO test method to follow when you need to determine the thickness of textiles and textile products.

This ISO testing standard uses a pressure method to determine the thickness of your textile samples. It’s not applicable to textile floor coverings, nonwovens, geotextiles and coated fabrics.

Testing the thickness of textiles can yield some incredibly useful data about its durability and other essential properties. To get the best results from your thickness test you’ll need a digital micrometer.

The ISO 5084 textile thickness testing approach

During an ISO 5084 textile thickness test the sample is measured as the distance between the reference plate on which the specimen rests and a parallel circular presser-foot. The foot exerts a specified pressure on the area of the textile under test. The perpendicular distance between the reference plates is measured and recorded after a specified time.

ISO 5084 thickness tester requirements

To carry out a textile thickness test to ISO 5084 standards, you’ll need the following apparatus:

  • A thickness tester with:
  • Interchangeable presser-feet, of area appropriate to the type of fabric to be tested
  • Reference plate, with a plane upper surface of diameter greater than that of the presser-foot
  • Means for moving the presser-foot
  • A thickness testing gauge

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 5084 thickness testing?

Messmer Büchel Digital Micrometer 49-56
With the Digital Micrometer 49-56 from Messmer Büchel you’ll achieve accurate thickness measurements of a wide range of sheet-like substrates even at low pressures. And the instrument complies to the most demanding of international standards.
