Introducing AS/NZ 1301.400S – Industrial Physics

AS/NZ 1301.400S is a combined Australian and New Zealand testing standard that was developed to standardize methods for the tear resistance testing of paper. 

The Standards New Zealand and Standards Australia inspection bodies work together to develop harmonized joint standards under the title ‘AS/NZS’, including this Elmendorf tear test.  

The AS/NZ 1301.400S tear testing method employs the Elmendorf testing approach to determine the (out-of-plane) tearing resistance of paper. An Elmendorf tear test shows you the impact of force that may cause such a tear in a sample of paper.  

This type of tear resistance test, also known as tear strength testing, is used to determine how well a material can survive tearing or cutting when under stress. The Elmendorf tear test can also be used for boards with a low grammage, if the tearing resistance is within the range of the instrument. This standard does not apply to corrugated fiberboard, but it may be applied to the components of such boards.
