AS / NZS 1580.408.5 is a pull-off adhesion test designed to test the adhesion properties of many different types of paints and coatings.
This is an Australian / New Zealand adhesive strength testing standard brought to you by Appita, a not-for-profit industry association that supports the advancement of the pulp, paper packaging and bioproducts industries.
The AS / NZS 1580.408.5 standard provides a pull-off adhesion testing method to establish the adhesion properties of a coating by determining the greatest perpendicular force (in tension) that a given surface area of coating can bear before it is detached.
This APPITA test method can be used for all coatings on rigid materials but is particularly suitable for testing adhesion of coatings on concrete and masonry surfaces.
Adhesive strength tests are tension and compression tests for many types of materials, used across many industries. Adhesion testers generally focus on the bond strength between two materials, created with some type of coating such as tape, glue, or gels.
Pull-off adhesion testing typically involves a digital or manual pull-off adhesion testing machine with a dolly.
Before starting the test, both the dolly and coating need to be cleaned. The adhesive is then prepared and added to the dolly, which is then adhered to the coated surface. The adhesive is then left to cure.
Next up, the machine’s actuator is placed over the dolly and pressure is applied until the point that the adhesion fails. The pressure may be achieved using a hydraulic pump.
