Introducing ASTM D5729 – Industrial Physics

ASTM D5729 is a global ASTM international standard designed to guide thickness testing of nonwoven fabrics.

Thickness is one of the basic physical properties of nonwoven fabrics and can be measured using a digital micrometer

In certain industrial applications, the thickness may require rigid control within specified limits. Bulk and warmth properties of nonwoven fabrics are often estimated from their thickness values, and thickness helps you to measure performance characteristics, including before and after abrasion and shrinkage.

The thickness values of most nonwoven fabric samples vary considerably depending on the pressure applied to the specimen at the time the thickness measurement is taken. In all cases, the apparent thickness varies inversely with the pressure applied. So, it’s essential that the pressure be specified when discussing or listing any thickness value.

Commercially recognized thickness testing

ASTM D5729 nonwoven fabric testing is used in the trade for acceptance testing of commercial shipments of nonwoven fabrics. This ASTM test method is suitable for most treated or untreated, nonwoven fabrics. This includes those that are heavily sized, coated or resin treated.

Sometimes technicians fail to get good agreement between results on certain fabrics using the ASTM D5729 process alone. Some caution is advised when comparing results between labs, which is why this test method also details some additional comparative tests to consider.

Oh, and one more thing! If you’re looking for an ASTM thickness test for highloft nonwoven fabrics, then you’ll likely find ASTM D5736 is a better fit.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM D5729 testing?

Digital Micrometer 49-56

The popular 49-56 digital micrometer gives precise thickness testing measurements. Whether you’re working with nonwovens, paper, plastic and plastic films or tissue paper, textiles and other sheet-like substrates.

It’s a great tool for nonwoven fabric testing to international standards, including ASTM D5729, ISO, EDANA and more.
