Gloss is the visual perception of shininess, and it comes from the way a surface reflects light. When light hits a very smooth surface, most of it reflects in a single direction, the specular direction, and the surface looks glossy. When the surface is rough or open, light scatters in many directions and the surface looks matte. Measuring gloss puts a repeatable number against that perception so that quality, R&D, and operations experts can specify it, control it, and prove it.
Gloss can be measured at different angles, and the correct angle depends on the material and how glossy it is. For paper and board, the recognized geometry is 75 degrees, measured from the vertical. Paper is a comparatively low to medium gloss material, and the shallow 75 degree angle spreads the measurement across a wider patch of surface. This makes the reading more sensitive and more repeatable on paper than the 20 or 60 degree angles used for high-gloss coatings and plastics. It is the angle called for in the paper gloss standards TAPPI T480 and ISO 8254-1.
A paper glossmeter contains a light source and a receptor set at matched angles. Light is projected onto the sample at 75 degrees, and the detector measures the intensity of the light reflected at the equal and opposite angle. That intensity is compared against a calibrated black glass reference tile, which is assigned a known gloss value, and the result is reported as a percentage of reflected light, on a scale of 0 to 100. Because the reading is relative to a reference standard, calibration is central to getting numbers that agree between instruments, sites, and suppliers.
Two standards govern 75 degree paper gloss. TAPPI T480 is the North American method published by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, and ISO 8254-1 is the international equivalent for 75 degree gloss. Both define the measurement geometry, the reference standards, and the reporting so that a gloss value measured in one mill can be trusted in another. Aligning to these standards is what lets a converter and a paper maker agree on a single specification.
Industrial Physics measures paper gloss through the Technidyne brand, and there are two routes depending on how you work.
Because gloss is a relative measurement, results are only as good as the calibration behind them. Technidyne paper gloss calibration standards for the TEST/Plus, and the matched standards for the PROFILE/Plus Gloss, are certified traceable to master standards as described in TAPPI T480, with traceability to the National Research Council of Canada, an ISO Level II laboratory. A regular calibration schedule keeps measurements consistent between calibration cycles and protects the accuracy of every reading.
Gloss readings can drift for practical reasons rather than instrument faults. The most common are a sample that is not flat against the measurement port, so the geometry is disturbed; a dirty or scratched black glass reference tile; measuring the wrong side or ignoring the difference between top and bottom (wire and felt) sides; and comparing readings taken at different angles. Holding the sheet flat, keeping the reference tile clean, recording which side is measured, and calibrating on schedule remove most of this variation.
Gloss is a direct link between a production process and a finished appearance. It reflects how well the coating and calendering steps are controlled, and it predicts how printed packaging and publication grades will look to the end customer. Measuring it accurately, to the recognized standards, is part of how Industrial Physics helps quality, R&D, and operations experts protect the integrity of their products and their customers’ brands. Paper and board gloss is measured at 75 degrees from the vertical, in line with TAPPI T480 and ISO 8254-1. The shallow angle spreads the reading across the surface, which makes it more sensitive and repeatable on low to medium gloss materials like paper.

Paper is not identical on both faces or in both directions. The top and bottom (felt and wire) sides can differ, and gloss can vary along and across the sheet. Measuring both sides and both directions reveals coating or calendering variation that a single reading would miss.
Coated and cast-coated papers and boards, light-weight coated publication grades, labels, and printed packaging all rely on gloss control, because appearance is part of the specification. Uncoated grades are measured too, usually where a matte or controlled finish must stay consistent.
