How to Measure Gel Strength with the TQC Sheen DV2400 Gel Strength Tester

How to Measure Gel Strength | TQC Sheen DV2400 Gel Strength Tester

The TQC Sheen DV2400 Gel Strength Tester is a precision instrument designed to measure the yield strength and viscosity of thick paints, gels, putties and semi-solid materials. In this video, you will see how the instrument works, how a sample is prepared and loaded, and how it delivers reliable, repeatable results for quality control and research applications.

A redesign of the Sheen 414N, the DV2400 introduces a variable speed range of 0.5 to 5.0 rpm in place of the fixed 2 rpm of its predecessor, giving greater flexibility across a wider range of material consistencies.

Key Features of the DV2400 Gel Strength Tester

  • Measures yield strength and viscosity of thick paints, gels, putties and semi-solid materials
  • Variable speed range of 0.5 to 5.0 rpm for flexible testing across material consistencies
  • Digital display for clear, direct readings
  • Interchangeable spindle options to suit different viscosity levels and product types
  • Calibrated spring with an engraved 0-450 g/cm scale
  • Magnetically fastened 250 ml sample can for quick, secure loading
  • Manual and automatic operation, suitable for both laboratory and production environments

Understanding Gel Strength Testing

Gel strength testing evaluates the consistency, stability and structural integrity of thick and semi-solid materials. The DV2400 determines yield strength using a rotating spindle system. A 250 ml can containing the sample is magnetically fastened onto the turntable, which is loaded with a calibrated spring displaying an engraved 0-450 g/cm scale. When the paddle spindle is immersed and rotates at the set speed, it drives the can and turntable. After a peak reading and a short stabilisation period, a steady torque value is shown on the scale.

The variable speed range makes the instrument adaptable: lower rpm and smaller spindles suit thicker products, while higher rpm and larger spindles allow lower-viscosity materials to be tested. This gives quality teams a controlled, repeatable way to verify product consistency and formulation stability across production.

Typical Applications

Gel strength and consistency testing supports quality control and R&D across sectors including:

  • Paints and coatings manufacturing
  • Inks, adhesives and sealants
  • Putties, fillers and semi-solid formulations
  • R&D laboratories developing and verifying new formulations

The DV2400 sits within the wider Industrial Physics viscosity testing portfolio, alongside instruments such as the Digital Krebs Viscometer for related consistency and viscosity measurements.
