This video features two Technidyne roll hardness solutions: the ACA RoQ Inline Roll Hardness Analyzer and the handheld ACA RoQ Roll Hardness Profiler. Both measure the hardness profile of wound rolls so paper, paperboard, corrugated, film and non-woven producers can spot soft edges, bagginess and inconsistent winding before they cause runnability problems or customer complaints. The Inline unit is fully automated and installs directly on the production line, measuring every roll after winding and before packaging with no operator needed. Roll hardness profiling checks how firmly a roll is wound across its width and from core to outside. A good roll is wound with uniform or gradually diminishing hardness from the core outward, so it can support its own weight and withstand impact and compressive loads through shipping and handling. Rolls wound too soft or too tight lead to problems such as soft edges, bagginess, rope marks and wrinkles – and often to runnability issues or customer complaints further down the line.
Measuring the hardness profile lets producers define a good or bad roll objectively rather than by feel. Caliper variations across the web are often too small for online scanners or lab tests to catch, but they show up in the roll hardness profile. The two ACA RoQ units approach this in different ways: the Inline Analyzer builds the check into the line and measures every roll automatically, which removes operator variation and supports full traceability, while the handheld Profiler gives quality and R&D teams a portable way to investigate specific rolls and troubleshoot winding, converting and finishing processes.
