Introducing TAPPI T453 – Industrial Physics

TAPPI T453 is an industry testing method to measure the effect of hostile environments on the properties of paper and board.

TAPPI is the technical arm of the American Paper & Pulp Association (APPA), and it gathers and disseminates information concerning production matters.

When paper or board is exposed to a hostile environment over a period of time, then natural changes will occur. The environmental factors can include anything from elevated temperatures – through to some types of radiation, chemicals and gases like sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.

The TAPPI T453 test method provides a dry treatment procedure for paper or board and the general approach for testing heat treated materials. It’s an accelerated aging test to obtain information on how the properties of the paper will change over time. The method is based on work that’s been done with printing and writing papers, but it may be used on other types of paper and board.

The test properties of the paper or board are compared, before and after, accelerated aging in a forced ventilation oven at 105 degrees centigrade. This type of paper stability test enables you to rank similar papers for their long-term stability.

What can be tested with this paper accelerated aging test?

The types of paper tests that you can carry out on samples that have been aged in this manner include:

  • Mechanical tests (burst testing, tensile testing, folding and tearing resistance)
  • Optical tests (brightness, yellowness, opacity)
  • Chemical (PH and alkali solubility).
