Introducing TAPPI T824 – Industrial Physics

TAPPI T824 is a TAPPI international testing method to measure the fluted edge crush strength of corrugating mediums, following the flexible beam method. 

This TAPPI compressive strength test evaluates the ability of  a corrugating medium to contribute to the compression strength of a corrugated box. It gives you a procedure for measuring the edgewise compression strength of a laboratory-fluted strip of corrugating medium in a direction parallel to the fluted tips. 

What is an edge crush test?

SImply put, an edge crush test is a way of determining the cross-direction force you’ll need to crush a sample of corrugated board until it fails. It’s particularly useful for the lighter weight corrugated cardboards of the modern age, which include recycled composites that weigh less but can withstand more pressure than their traditional counterparts. 

The edgewise compressive strength test is one of the most important quality control checks for corrugated box makers and users. That’s because it’s used to determine the dynamic compression strength of containers made from that board.  

Why is compression strength testing important?

Fiberboard shipping containers can be subjected to loads while in normal use, which are resisted by their compression strength.
