TAPPI T 479

Introducing TAPPI T 479 - Industrial Physics

TAPPI T 479 is a TAPPI international testing standard that’s used to test the smoothness of paper using the Bekk method of smoothness testing.  

The Bekk Method is a tried-and-tested surface roughness testing approach based around air flow. It involves drawing air across the surface of a test piece under a partial vacuum. 

Bekk smoothness depends on the form, total volume and distribution of pores created between the paper surface and the ideal plane under the specified contact conditions. The higher the Bekk smoothness number, the greater the smoothness. The porosity of the tested product is also included in the measurement.  

The TAPPI T 479 smoothness testing approach 

This TAPPI standard can be used to determine the smoothness of a wide range of papers. To carry out a TAPPI T 479 test you’ll determine the smoothness of individual surfaces of paper when under a clamping pressure of approximately 100 kN/m2 and using an anvil with an effective area of 10.00 ± 0.05 cm2.
