PSTC 101

Introducing PSTC 101 - Industrial Physics  

PSTC 101 is an international PSTC testing standard that was developed to determine the peel adhesion properties of pressure sensitive tapes. 

Peel adhesion is the force required to remove a pressure sensitive tape from a test panel or its own backing at a controlled angle and at a standard rate and condition. 

PSTC-101 is a harmonized international peel testing standard. These types of standard tests are created under the understanding that societies and other technical bodies from a variety of countries have agreed to consolidate their similar standards under the auspices of ISO. The PSTC 101 peel testing standard addresses the various types of peel tests appropriate for pressure sensitive tape. 

What is peel strength testing?

Looking for a tried and tested way to measure the bond strength of a material? Peel strength testing is a great solution. Coming under the umbrella of adhesion testing, this flexible test and inspect solution is an effective way to characterize an adhesive bond.  

Peel strength testing determines the adhesive strength of materials that have been bonded together. The materials are peeled apart at a constant speed and the strength of the force needed to separate the materials is calculated along with the width of the bond surface to determine the peel strength. Typically, these adhesion tests involve peeling two flexible materials that have been bonded to each other, or one flexible bonded material adhered from a rigid substrate.  

Peel strength testing is often used to characterize the bonding strength of tape, adhesives, and flexible substrates, such as rubber, films, biomaterials, consumables, medical packaging and more. There are many different peel testing methods to choose from, depending on the materials you want to inspect.  

PSTC 101 peel test methods

Within the PSTC 101 peel testing documents you get a number of test options to choose from depending on what you need to know: 

  •  PSTC 101 peel test method A gives a measure of the adherence, when peeled at 180˚ angle at 5 mm/sec, to a standard steel panel or other surface of interest for a single-coated tape. 
  •  PSTC 101 peel test method B gives a measure of the adherence to the backing of a single-coated tape. 
  •  PSTC 101 peel test method C gives a measure of adherence of double-coated tape to a standard steel panel or other surface of interest. 
  •  PSTC 101 peel test method D gives a measure of adherence of the release liner to the adhesive of either single or double-coated tape. 
  •  PSTC 101 peel test method E gives a measure of adherence of an adhesive transfer tape to a standard steel panel or other surface of interest. 
  •  PSTC 101 peel test method F gives a measure of adherence, when peeled at 90˚ angle, to a standard steel panel or other surface of interest for a single-coated tape.
