Introducing ISO R60 – Industrial Physics

ISO R60 is an international ISO testing standard that will help you to measure the apparent bulk density of loose powdered or granular material that can be poured from a funnel.

Apparent bulk density is a property of powders, granules and other ‘divided’ solids. It’s typically used for characterizing mineral components (soil, gravel), chemical substances, (pharmaceutical) ingredients, foodstuff or any other masses of corpuscular or particulate matter.

What is apparent bulk density testing?

Apparent bulk density is defined as the mass of many particles of the material divided by the total volume they occupy. The total volume includes particle volume, inter-particle void volume and internal pore volume.

Bulk density is not an intrinsic property of a material, it can change depending on how the material is handled. For example, a powder poured into a cylinder will have a particular bulk density; if the cylinder is disturbed, the powder particles will move and usually settle closer together, resulting in a higher bulk density. For this reason, the bulk density of powders is usually reported both as “freely settled” (or “poured” density) and “tapped” density (where the tapped density refers to the bulk density of the powder after a specified compaction process, usually involving vibration of the container.)

ISO R60 apparent bulk density testing apparatus

To perform a successful apparent bulk density test to ISO R60 standards you’ll need a few pieces of apparatus, all of which we can supply.

  • Measuring balance: accurate to 0.l g.
  • Measuring cylinder: smoothly finished inside and constructed of metal.
  • Funnel: containing a cover for the lower orifice.

ISO R60 apparent bulk density testing report

Once you have completed your bulk density test to ISO R60 standards you’ll need to write up a report containing:

  • Complete identification of the sample material
  • The individual and mean test results
  • The type and amount of antistatic agent added.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your apparent bulk density testing?

Apparent Bulk Density Apparatus – Ray-Ran
These instruments are used in the measurement of apparent density, bulk factory and the pourability of plastic materials such as molding powders. We offer several models that were developed to satisfy the requirements of ISO 60, and ASTM D1895 Methods A, B and C. Many different types for all bulk density testing needs are available on request – just ask!
