Introducing ISO 9352 – Industrial Physics

ISO 9532 is an international ISO testing standard that’s used to determine the abrasive wear resistance of plastics using abrasive wheels. 

The International Organization of Standards (ISO) produces a wide range of ISO standards to guide manufacturers, production lines and laboratories when checking the integrity of packaging, products, and materials across many industries.  

Using an abrasion tester, the ISO 9532 abrasion wear resistance test is used to inspect molded test specimens, components and finished products but it’s not applicable to cellular materials or paints. The abrasion test conditions, and the method of expressing the results, may differ according to the type of material you’re testing.  

The ISO 9352 abrasion testing approach

To perform a successful ISO 9352 abrasion test you’ll need to apply two abrasive wheels to the test specimen with a specified load. For clarity – an abrasive wheel is a small grinding wheel, or a roller, faced with abrasive paper. The wear obtained after your test specimen is rotated through a specified number of revolutions is assessed. This can be done through inspecting factors such as mass loss, volume loss or change in optical properties. 

You’ll need to place your sample on a motor-driven rotating disc. A pair of abrasive wheels is allowed to turn freely on their axis and is applied to the test specimen at a specified position under a specified load. 

Abrasive wear is the progressive loss of material from the operating surface of a plastic material resulting from the cutting or scratching action of the abrasive wheel. The abrasive wear obtained after rotating the plastic specimen through a specified number of revolutions is assessed by an appropriate procedure. This can include testing for mass loss, volume loss or change in optical properties. 

What samples should I use when ISO 9352 abrasion testing?

There’s two types of plastic testing samples that you can use when abrasion resistance testing to ISO 9352 standards:  

  • Disc shaped plastic samples with a nominal diameter 100 mm 
  • Octagon shaped plastic samples, created by cutting off the corners of squares of nominal side length 100 mm. Their thickness should be uniform and between 0.5mm and 10mm.
