Introducing ISO 9117-5 – Industrial Physics

ISO 9117-5 is part of an ISO paint drying test that’s used to determine the drying time of paint or varnishes once it reaches the through-dry state after a specified drying period.

The International Organization of Standards (ISO) produces a wide range of ISO standards to guide manufacturers, production lines and laboratories when checking the integrity of packaging, products, and materials across many industries.

Part five of ISO 9117 uses the Modified Bandow-Wolff test method to determine whether a single coat or a multi-coat system of paint, varnish or related material has reached the through-dry state after a specified drying period.

ISO 9117-5 helps you to test whether coatings, including those produced using multi-coat systems, have reached various stages of drying. It also allows the drying speed to be assessed.

Plastic coating testing and ISO 9117-5

When you’re working with plastic coatings, it’s only possible to determine whether the later stages of drying have been reached, to a limited extent. This is because the elasto-plastic behaviour of plastic coatings can’t be evaluated on the basis of a temporary visible change to the coating surface.

Our ISO 9117-5 coating testing equipment

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 9117-5 coating testing?

TQC Sheen Drying time recorder option for TQC Sheen Automatic Film Applicators
Our drying time recorder option is a tool to enhance the capability of the TQC range of  automatic film applicators. This device allows you to accurately define the drying time of various types of coatings within the time range of one minute to 48 hours.

The drying time recorder option can be easily clamped on any standard TQC Automatic film applicator with firmware 2.01 and above.

Another ISO 9117-5 compliant tool we make is the TQC Sheen Casterguide. Finally, be sure to check out some more of the paint testing equipment across the Industrial Physics portfolio.
