ISO 8502-4 is an international ISO standard procedure for estimating condensation levels in environments where you apply paints and coatings to steel substrates.
Regular maintenance and retreating with protective coatings limits degradation and prevents the onset of rust. Proper steel substrate preparation is important as it ensures the long-term performance of any protective coatings you apply.
Some paints and coatings need to be applied in dry conditions when they’re applied to steel structures. Using a dewpoint meter and following the ISO 8502-4 process will help you to ensure the conditions are optimal or acceptable.
The main factors that can influence steel substrate performance and preparation can be categorized as follows:
Part four of the ISO 8502 standard focuses on estimating the probability of condensation prior to paint application. It’s used to establish whether conditions at the job site are suitable for painting or not.
You’ll often find that thin films of condensed water are difficult to spot. So, it’s important to have a method that will give you an accurate estimate of the probability of condensation forming, prior to the application of any paint.

The TQC DewCheck 4, dewpoint meter is a versatile dewmeter to measure and record all climate parameters required to treat surfaces.
This easy to use and robust dewmeter conforms to ISO 8502-4 & ASTM D3276-07 standards. It measures the relative humidity (%RH), ambient temperature (Ta) and surface temperature (Ts). It also calculates the dewpoint temperature (Td) and the difference between the dewpoint temperature and the surface temperature (ÄT).
The difference between the surface temperature and dewpoint temperature indicates the optimal climate conditions for painting. All parameters can be stored in the dewmeter’s memory, tagged with a date and time.
