ISO 7765-1 is an ISO international free-falling dart testing method that will help you to determine the energy that causes a thin plastic film or sheet to fail, using the staircase testing approach.
The falling dart impact test is a straightforward and efficient way to test the impact strength or toughness of samples made from various substances. You can use this impact test to measure a material’s impact resistance, by dropping a free-falling dart and recording the resulting effect on your securely clamped sample.
The first part of the ISO 7765 method was designed specifically for plastic film testing of samples that are under one millimeter thick. You drop a free-falling dart from a specified height, under specified conditions, until you find the failure point of more than 50% of your samples.
Within ISO 7765-1 there are two free-fall dart testing methods to choose from:
The measurement technique for these free-falling dart tests is known as the staircase testing method. This means that a uniform missile mass increment is employed during testing. It’s then decreased or increased by a uniform increment, depending upon the result of the last drop.
To perform a successful ISO 7765-1 falling dart impact test you’ll need to understand a couple of key definitions:
Impact failure mass: the falling-dart missile mass, estimated statistically, at which 50% of the specimens would fail.
Missile mass: the total of the masses of the falling-dart, the incremental weights attached and the locking collar.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 7765-1 falling dart impact testing?
Ray-Ran – FD-A2 Advanced Floor Mounted Falling Dart Tester
