Introducing ISO 7263 – Industrial Physics

ISO 7263 is an ISO international test method that helps you to determine the flat crush resistance of corrugated mediums after laboratory fluting, using an A-flute geometry.

The procedure is applicable to any corrugating medium, after fluting, when making corrugated boards. For the best results you’ll need a tried and tested crush tester built to ISO standards.

ISO 7263 testing procedures

The flat crush resistance of a laboratory-fluted corrugating medium indicates the potential flat crush resistance of the corrugated fibreboard to be manufactured. The corrugated medium is fluted by passing it between heated rollers and two different test procedures are used:

  • Procedure (a): the fluted corrugating medium is compressed immediately after fluting.
  • Procedure (b): the fluted corrugating medium is conditioned for 30 min to 35 min under standard laboratory test conditions before being compressed.

The ISO 7623 standard documents offer both testing types as people highlight advantages and disadvantages to each. It’s suggested that procedure (a) gives considerably higher results than those obtained with procedure (b). Apparently the differences in results relate to the lower moisture content and higher stiffness of the unconditioned fluted corrugating medium, or the changing flute profile during the conditioning period.

ISO 7263 crush testing definitions

Within the ISO 7263 flat crush resistance testing documents there’s a number of key definitions that you’ll need to familiarize yourself with before you start your own tests.

Flat crush resistance: the maximum force that a corrugated test piece will withstand before the flutes collapse under an increasing force applied (perpendicular to its surface).

Flat crush resistance index: the flat crush resistance divided by the grammage of the paper.

We’ve learnt a thing or two about crush testing over the decades. Now Industrial Physics is recognized as a brand that likes to bring new, innovative crush tester equipment to market.

We crush the competition when it comes to crush testing and we like to share our knowledge. Across the knowledgebase section of our website we publish lots of blogs on related subjects. For example, why not have a look at this blog on compression and crush testing? Then you could try this piece which explores the reasons why manufacturers should consider switching to short-span compression testing.
