ISO 6507

Introducing ISO 6507 - Industrial Physics

ISO 6507 is a group of international ISO standards that are used to support the accurate and effective vickers hardness testing of metallic samples.  

The vickers hardness test is a microhardness test that uses a vickers indenter. This is shaped like a squat pyramid and it’s typically pressed into the surface of the material for 10 seconds. The amount of force used is of a predetermined amount and varies depending on the material being tested. 

Once the time is up, the indentation left in the sample is analyzed optically to measure the lengths of the diagonals. These are then used to calculate the size of the impression.  

What’s included within the ISO 6507 standard?

ISO 6507-1  

ISO 6507-1 is the first part of this group of ISO standards. It specifies the vickers hardness test method for three different ranges of test force that can be used to examine metallic material samples. They are categorized as follows: 

  • Vickers hardness test: F ≥ 49,03 (ranges of test force) ≥HV 5 (hardness symbol)  
  • Low-force vickers hardness test: 1,961 ≤ F < 49,03 (ranges of test force) HV 0,2 to  
  • Vickers microhardness test: 0,009 807 ≤ F < 1,961 (ranges of test force) HV 0,001 to  

ISO 6507-2

ISO 6507-2 specifies a method of verification and calibration of vickers hardness testing machines and diagonal measuring systems. 

This second part of the ISO standard relates to the hardness testing machine itself, the indenter and the diagonal length measuring system. It also gives you an indirect verification method for the overall checking of the machine, using reference blocks.  

ISO 6507-2 is applicable to portable hardness testing machines. However, you can’t use it to check hardness testing machines based on different measurement principles such as the ultrasonic impedance method.

ISO 6507-3 shows you how to calibrate any reference blocks you use when verifying that your vickers hardness testing machine is fit for purpose.
