ISO 5636-5 is an international ISO standard used to determine the air permeance (medium range) of paper and board using the Gurley air permeance testing method.
The Gurley method involves testing the air permeance of paper and board using an air resistance tester. It’s applicable to papers and boards which have air permeances between 0,1 µm/(Pa⋅s) and 100 µm/(Pa⋅s).
The ISO 5636-5 test is unsuitable for rough-surfaced materials, which cannot be securely clamped to avoid leakage.
Using a suitable air resistance tester the Gurley air permeance test will typically give you accurate results in less than an hour. So what does it look like in practice? A test piece of paperboard or corrugated board is placed in the Gurley permanence test apparatus, which is filled with air. This is compressed by the weight of a vertical cylinder floating in liquid.
Next, the compressed air is forced through the sample – as it passes through, the cylinder falls. By timing how long it takes for a set amount of air to pass through the sample, you get the formula for how porous the material.
