ISO 5636-4 is an international ISO standard used to determine the air permeance (medium range) of paper and board using the Sheffield permeance testing method.
This ISO permeance testing approach is applicable to papers and boards which have air permeances between 0,02 µm/(Pa·s) and 25 µm/(Pa·s) when tested using the Sheffield porosity testing apparatus. It’s unsuitable for rough-surfaced materials, which cannot be securely clamped to avoid leakage.
So, what does air permeance testing offer? It reveals the air flow rate through unit area under unit pressure difference in unit time, under specified conditions. There are other types of porosity measurement available – including ISO 5636-5 which adopts the Gurley air permeance testing method.
To carry out a Sheffield porosity test you first clamp a sample piece of paperboard or corrugated board between two rubber orifice plates. The absolute air pressure on one side of the porosity test piece is equivalent to atmospheric pressure. Then the difference in pressure between the two sides of the piece is maintained at a small, substantially constant, value.
The air flow rate through the test area is determined and, by timing how long it takes for a set amount of air to pass through the sample, you can calculate the air permeance. So you can understand how porous the material is.
