Introducing ISO 5636-3 – Industrial Physics 

ISO 5636-3 is an international ISO standard that’s used to determine the air permeance (medium range) of paper and board using the Bendtsen testing method. 

The International Organization of Standards (ISO) produces a wide range of ISO standards to guide manufacturers, production lines and laboratories when checking the integrity of packaging, products, and materials across many industries.

The ISO 5636-3 air permeance testing standard is applicable to papers and boards which have air permeances between 0,35 µm/(Pa·s) and 15 µm/(Pa·s) when tested with Bendtsen testing apparatus. It is unsuitable for rough-surfaced materials which cannot be securely clamped to avoid leakage. 

Air permeance can be defined as the mean air flow rate through unit area, under unit pressure, difference in unit time. 

The ISO 5636-3 paper and board testing approach  

To carry out an ISO 5636-3 air permeance test you’ll need to first clamp your test sample between a circular gasket and an annular flat surface of known dimensions. The absolute air pressure on one side of the test area of the test piece is equivalent to atmospheric pressure. The difference in pressure between the two sides of the test piece is maintained at a small, substantially constant, value during the test. You’ll then need to determine the flow of air through the test area in a specified time.
