Introducing ISO 2815:2003 - Industrial Physics

ISO 2815:2003 is an international ISO standard that uses an indentation test to measure the residual deformation of single - or multi-layer - coatings of paints, varnishes and related products.  

This ISO standard hardness test uses a Buchholz indentor. The length of the indentation shows you the level of deformation you can expect when your coating system is challenged by real world conditions.  

The results of the ISO 2815:2003 indentation hardness test can be influenced by time, temperature and humidity. It stands to reason that the indentation depth will also depend upon the film thickness. So therefore, the result of this hardness test is only valid if the coating thickness exceeds the minimum value specified through this ISO standard test.

It’s also important to note that this indentation test is not suitable for products which contain a strong plasticizer. 

What is a Buchholz indentation test?  

The Buchholz indentation test is a useful hardness testing coating evaluation method. 

To perform the test to the ISO 2815:2003 standard, a Buchholz indentation tester is needed. The tester contains a sharp tool that’s made from metal. This tool is impressed upon the coating sample using a constant load.  

Now that the coating has an observable indent, after a set recovery time, a microscope is used to measure the size of the depression. The measurement is compared to a table that equates the size of the depression to a hardness testing value. 

Before you start this ISO test it’s important that the tester is properly calibrated and the sharpness of the tool is confirmed. If there’s any problems in these areas then you can get a false hardness test reading.
