ISO 2758 is an international ISO test method that determines the bursting strength of paper using increasing hydraulic pressure.
A bursting strength test such as the one described through ISO 2758 uses this hydraulic pressure to force an elastic diaphragm through a circular area of your paper sample. In the Industrial Physics portfolio you’ll find a wide range of burst testers to perform an accurate ISO 2758 test.
Also known as a burst test, the bursting strength test is an effective process to determine how much pressure your materials can take.
By increasing the pressure level on products such as flexible packaging you can determine the maximum bursting pressure. The bursting test helps you to determine how much pressure your products can withstand when doing the job they were designed for. A process like that presented through ISO 2758 helps to demonstrate where, why, and when they fail.
An effective bursting strength test identifies any weak points in your materials that could compromise performance, quality, or safety. ISO 2758 is one of several international testing standards that focuses entirely on the bursting test. It’s ideal for testing paper products.
To carry out an ISO 2758 bursting strength test you’ll need to place your paper sample over a circular elastic diaphragm. It should be rigidly clamped at the periphery, but free enough to bulge with the diaphragm.
Next up, the ISO 2758 bursting test involves pumping hydraulic fluid at a constant rate. You’ll see the diaphragm start to bulge until the test piece ruptures. The bursting strength of the test piece is the maximum value of the applied hydraulic pressure.
This ISO standard is applicable to paper with a bursting strength between the range 70 kPa and 1,400 kPa. If you need to identify the burst strength of materials with bursting strengths equal to or greater than 350 kPa, a similar alternative method is suggested through ISO 2759. You’ll find that ISO 2759 testing is useful for testing solid and corrugated fibreboard, irrespective of its envisaged bursting strength.
