ISO 2758

Introducing ISO 2758 - Industrial Physics

ISO 2758 is an international ISO test method that determines the bursting strength of paper using increasing hydraulic pressure.

A bursting strength test such as the one described through ISO 2758 uses this hydraulic pressure to force an elastic diaphragm through a circular area of your paper sample. In the Industrial Physics portfolio you’ll find a wide range of burst testers to perform an accurate ISO 2758 test.

What is a bursting strength test?

Also known as a burst test, the bursting strength test is an effective process to determine how much pressure your materials can take.

By increasing the pressure level on products such as flexible packaging you can determine the maximum bursting pressure. The bursting test helps you to determine how much pressure your products can withstand when doing the job they were designed for. A process like that presented through ISO 2758 helps to demonstrate where, why, and when they fail.

An effective bursting strength test identifies any weak points in your materials that could compromise performance, quality, or safety. ISO 2758 is one of several international testing standards that focuses entirely on the bursting test. It’s ideal for testing paper products.

The ISO 2758 bursting test approach

To carry out an ISO 2758 bursting strength test you’ll need to place your paper sample over a circular elastic diaphragm. It should be rigidly clamped at the periphery, but free enough to bulge with the diaphragm.

Next up, the ISO 2758 bursting test involves pumping hydraulic fluid at a constant rate. You’ll see the diaphragm start to bulge until the test piece ruptures. The bursting strength of the test piece is the maximum value of the applied hydraulic pressure.

This ISO standard is applicable to paper with a bursting strength between the range 70 kPa and 1,400 kPa. If you need to identify the burst strength of materials with bursting strengths equal to or greater than 350 kPa, a similar alternative method is suggested through ISO 2759. You’ll find that ISO 2759 testing is useful for testing solid and corrugated fibreboard, irrespective of its envisaged bursting strength.

ISO 2758 bursting strength test apparatus

To carry out an ISO 2758 test successfully you’ll need:

  • A clamping system which clamps the test piece firmly and uniformly between two annular, plane, parallel surfaces.
  • A bursting strength test diaphragm - circular in shape and made from natural or synthetic rubber.
  • A device that will apply increasing hydraulic pressure to the inside of the diaphragm until your sample bursts.

What’s covered within the ISO 2758 standard document?

The ISO 2758 bursting strength test documents include the following sections:

  • Scope of the document and the principle of the method
  • Guidance on sampling and preparation of bursting strength test samples
  • How to express your burst test results
  • How to test your clamps
  • How to calibrate your pressure measuring system.

ISO 2758 testing devices

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 2758 testing?

Burst Tester 13-56

Our Digital Mullen-style burst testers measure the strength and resilience of sheet materials by testing for real life failures such as punctures and rupture. The technique uses hydraulic pressurization of a membrane against a clamped, film, or sheet sample. This produces a multi-directional stress on the material to failure – which is the burst strength.

Messmer Büchel – Parker Print-Surf (Single Head) 58-06

Brought to you by Messmer Büchel, our paper testing specialist brand, this industry-leading surface roughness tester inspects your samples according to the Dr. John Parker method.

The data collected from our surface roughness tester shows you how much ink to use and the way it should be applied. This helps you to avoid costly, time-consuming printing problems.

Bursting with burst test knowledge

Industrial Physics has been making devices and accessories to support bursting strength testing for many years. We like to share the insight we’ve gained with our customers. Check out the knowledgebase section of our website. Here you’ll find articles that delve into all manner of materials testing subjects including bursting strength testing.
