International Standards

ISO 2360

Introducing ISO 2360 - Industrial Physics

ISO 2360 is an international ISO standard used to test non-conductive coatings on non-magnetic, electrically conductive base metals.

It’s a coating thickness testing measurement and it’s sometimes referred to as the amplitude-sensitive eddy-current method.

Through the ISO 2360 method the term ‘coating’ is used to describe materials including paints and varnishes, electroplated coatings, enamel coatings, plastic coatings, claddings and powder coatings.

This ISO approach is particularly useful for coating thickness testing of most oxide coatings produced by anodizing. However, it’s not applicable to all conversion coatings - some are too thin for ISO 2360 testing.

More on ISO 2360 testing

You can use this method for thickness testing of coatings on magnetic base metals, but it’s not really recommended. If this is your goal, you’re better off adopting the magnetic method that’s specified in ISO 2178.

In the case of very thick coatings over one millimeter, the amplitude-sensitive eddy-current coating thickness testing method of ISO 2360 is suitable.
