ISO 15754 is an ISO test method for determining the tensile strength of paper and board in a z-direction.
There are several methods developed to measure internal bond strength or delamination strength of paper and board. This ISO tensile test is an effective and accurate choice for most paper and board samples, but it’s not applicable to corrugated fibreboard.
The Z-directional tensile strength test (ZDT) measures the tensile strength of a specimen which is sandwiched and compressed between two adhesive tapes. After compression, the specimen is separated to determine the maximum force at rupture.
To perform a successful ISO 15754 test you’ll need a ZDT tester. This is a compact, precision computer-controlled tensile testing device that measures the internal fiber bond strength of your paper and paperboard samples.
The ISO 15754 test does not determine the absolute strength of the paper as the measurement is affected by the tape, the pressing conditions and the test speed. And a word of caution - when tensile testing paper samples with a grammage of less than 60 g/m2 you’ll need to take extra care as the tape used in the Z-direction tensile test may reinforce the paper and affect your results.
At Industrial Physics we work hard to take the tension out of your tensile testing! We’ve been designing, building tensile testing machines and supporting our customers with tensile testing for many years.
