ISO 1519 is an international ISO bend test for paints and varnishes using a cylindrical mandrel bend tester.
The International Organization of Standards (ISO) produce a wide range of ISO standards to guide manufacturers, production lines and laboratories when checking the integrity of packaging, products, and materials across many industries.
The ISO 1519 cylindrical bend test gives you an empirical test procedure to assess the resistance of a coating of paint or varnish to cracking or detachment from a metal or plastic substrate. The paint or varnish sample is bent around a cylindrical mandrel under standard conditions.
This cylindrical bend test method is ideal for single coat systems, but it can also be used with multi-coat systems. You can test the complete system, or each coat can be tested separately.
To assess a coating’s compliance with a particular requirement you can use the ISO 1519 bend test method as a “pass / fail” test using a single specified size of mandrel. Alternatively, you can repeat the procedure using successively smaller mandrels. Taking the second approach, you determine the diameter of the first mandrel over which the coating cracks and / or becomes detached from the substrate.
In the ISO 1519 cylindrical bend test there’s two types of apparatus specified:
Both types of ISO 1519 cylindrical bend testing apparatus offer similar results with the same coating. However, typically only one will be used.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 1519 cylindrical bend testing?
