ISO 12192

Introducing ISO 12192 - Industrial Physics

ISO 12192 is an ISO international crush testing method that’s used to determine the compressive strength of paper and board using the ring crush resistance method.  

This ISO crush testing approach will help you to determine the edgewise compressive strength (ring crush resistance) of paper and paperboard. 

Fibreboard shipping containers are frequently subjected to in-plane compressive forces during shipment or storage. Therefore, the edgewise compressive strength of a container is an important measurement to understand. 

You’ll find that ISO 12192 crush resistance testing with a suitable crush tester is especially useful for the manufacture of fibreboard used in the manufacture of such air-bound cartons and packing cases. 

ISO 12192 crush testing - important information

The crush test resistance depends on the design of the containers and components of the board it’s made from. The in-plane crush resistance of these components can be measured by the ring crush resistance test.  

ISO 12192 is applicable to all paper and paperboard with a thickness in the range 280 µm to 580 µm. You can carry out ring crush resistance testing on samples that are thinner than 280 µm, but your results are more a reflection of the paper's stiffness than its compressive strength; your observations may actually result from a combination of both buckling failure and pure compression. 

It’s worth noting that, if you’re working with paper and board that’s thicker than 580 µm, it may be impossible to bend them to the circumference without disturbing the structure. 

The ISO 12192 crush testing principle

When carrying out a ring crush resistance test using the ISO 12192 method you take a test piece of paper or board, in the form of a narrow strip held in a ring form. You subject this to an increasing edgewise compressive force until it collapses. 

Apparatus for ISO 12192 crush testing 

There are certain pieces of apparatus that you’ll need to carry out a successful ISO 12192 crush test, all of which Industrial Physics can provide you with.  

Cutting device: consisting of a die cutter, capable of accurately cutting the test pieces to the specified dimensions with clean, sharp, parallel and straight edges. Other cutting devices such as a double-knife cutter may be used, provided they can be shown to give similar test results.  

Test-piece holder: consisting of a block, preferably cylindrical, having a cylindrical recession which, together with a removable central disc, forms an annular groove. 

Motor-driven, platen-type crush tester: in accordance with ISO 13820.
