International Standards

ISO 11998

Introducing ISO 11998 - Industrial Physics
ISO 11998 is an international standard to determine the wet-scrub resistance and cleanability of coatings, paints or varnishes.

It’s important to know how well your coatings will withstand repeated cleaning operations and penetration by soiling agents. ISO 11998 describes an accelerated method for the determination of wet-scrub resistance.
Wet scrub resistance testing to ISO 11998
The wet scrub resistance properties of your samples won't only be affected by the quality of the coating. It will also depend on the substrate, the method of application, the drying conditions and other factors.

In the ISO 11998 standard the evaluation of the coating is based on a defined substrate, a fixed application method, specified drying conditions and a defined method of wet scrubbing.

The test coating is applied to a test panel using a film applicator. It’s dried and conditioned, after which it’s weighed and subjected to 200 wet scrub cycles in a wet scrub testing machine.

From here it’s washed, dried and then it’s weighed again. This will show any loss in mass, from which the mean loss in film thickness can be calculated.

Through comparison of the mean loss in film thickness, with a specified value, the coating can be rated in wet scrub resistance classes.
Cleanability testing to ISO 11998
For the cleanability testing, soiling agents are applied to similarly prepared coated panels. They’re left in contact for a specified time. After which the coated panels are subjected to 200 wet scrub cycles.
ISO 11998 testing devices
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ISO 11998 testing?

Scrub abrasion and washability tester

This ISO 11998 compliant device is used to test the resistance of paints, varnishes or coatings to scratching, wearing, and color loss due to wet or dry abrasion. It does this by simulating everyday wear from cleaning actions or general use.

Heavy weight support tool

These simple devices are mandatory across many international standards - including ISO 11998. A tipped over tool can significantly scratch the sample and damage it beyond use!

Our heavyweight support tools stabilize your testing by creating a fixture point on the vertical axis of the tool.
