ISO 1183

Introducing ISO 1183 - Industrial Physics

ISO 1183 is a global ISO international standard method to determine the density of non-cellular plastics.  

It’s an ISO test that specifies three methods to measure the density of non-cellular plastics in the form of void-free molded or extruded objects. ISO 1183 can also be used to test powders, flakes and granules. 

Why is density testing important?

Density is one of the most important physical properties of a material. Closely tied to material microstructure, this ISO test will help you to understand the processing and end-use performance properties for materials like polyethylene. 

Density testing is used to reveal variations in the physical structure or composition of plastic materials. When you need to assess the uniformity of samples or specimens, density testing is a reliable option. Typically, the density of plastic materials depends upon the method of specimen preparation adopted.  

The three ISO 1183 density testing methods

So, what are the three types of density testing methods detailed within the ISO 1183 guidance? 

  • ISO 1183 method A: immersion method, for solid plastics (except for powders) in a void-free form. 
  • ISO 1183 method B: liquid pycnometer method, for particles, powders, flakes, granules or small pieces of finished parts. 
  • ISO 1183 method C: titration method, for plastics in any void-free form. 

The ISO 1183 test method is similar to the ASTM D1505 test method which we can also support you with using our density testing inspection devices.
