ISO 1133

Introducing ISO 1133 - Industrial Physics  

ISO 1133 is a set of international ISO standard procedures that determine the melt mass-flow rate (MFR) and the melt volume-flow rate (MVR) of thermoplastic materials.  

These two accurate ISO tests, primarily used for quality control and performed under specified temperature conditions, can be described as: 

  • Procedure A - a mass-measurement method  
  • Procedure B - a displacement-measurement method. 

Melt volume flow rate testing is particularly useful when inspecting materials of different filler content and when comparing filled, with unfilled, thermoplastics. Mass flow rate testing can be determined from melt volume flow rate testing measurements, or vice versa, provided the melt density at the test temperature is known. 

If you’re working with stable materials that aren’t rheologically sensitive to the conditions experienced during melt flow rate testing, this part of ISO 1133 is recommended. However, if your materials have rheological behaviors that are sensitive to the test’s temperatures and will degrade during inspection, ISO 1133-2 is a better option for you.

The MFR200 is our mid-range melt flow tester and it’s another great option for ISO 1133 testing!  

Molten polymer is extruded through a closely controlled orifice under pre-set conditions and pressure is produced by a dead weight system.  

The extruded polymer is cut off automatically and is then weighed. Using the time interval to extrude the polymer its flow rate over 10 minutes can easily be determined.
