Introducing ASTM F-2054 - Industrial Physics

ASTM F-2054 is a global ASTM testing standard for burst testing of flexible package seals using internal air pressurization and restraining plates. 

This ASTM burst test is used to quickly evaluate the seal strength of a package during the manufacturing process and at various stages of its life cycle. 

Why choose ASTM F-2054 burst testing?

Understanding the strength and resistance of packaging and its component parts is a key role of quality control. Burst tests simulate the pressures your products will encounter in the real world, to help you predict how they’ll perform. 

Pressure differentials may occur during processes such as sterilization and transportation. The ASTM F-2054 test gives you a quick way to evaluate package seal failure trends when the package is exposed to them.   

Armed with the ASTM F-2054 test method you can determine the bursting strength of a package. You can also explore and understand where a burst of the seal will typically occur.  

How to perform a ASTM F-2054 test 

The ASTM F-2054 test method will determine the minimum burst strength of a seal placed around the perimeter of a flexible package. This is as the package is internally pressurized and enclosed within restraining plates. 

The burst test internally and increasingly pressurizes a package until an area of the package seal around the perimeter “bursts” open. Restraining the package with plates during pressurization maintains its dimensions so you can apply stresses uniformly along the perimeter of the package, where the seals are normally placed.  

The ASTM F-2054 test is set up to detect the weakest area of the seal and offer the most accurate burst strength testing results. It can be used for most pouch type flexible packages with seals around the perimeter. It’s the ideal burst test for packages with seals that have a peelable seal feature for the end user to remove before use.
