Introducing ASTM F1140 – Industrial Physics

ASTM F1140 is a global ASTM test method to measure the internal pressurization failure resistance of unrestrained packages using creep testing and burst testing.

This ASTM test method provides a fast way to evaluate the tendency of a package type and material to fail when it’s exposed to a pressure differential. It mimics the pressure differentials that can occur during various stages of the package’s life cycle including sterilization or shipping by air.

ASTM F1140 testing essentials

When testing packages to ASTM F1140 it’s important that all parameters of the test method remain the same. So, what are some of the factors to get under control when carrying out pressure testing to this method? Typical parameters include:

  • Package size
  • Material
  • Seal configuration
  • Test equipment
  • Rate of air flow into the package
  • Machine sensitivity
  • Position of test article.

What’s involved in ASTM F1140 testing?

ASTM F1140 sets out a range of package pressure testing methods to show you how they will withstand internal pressurization.

Burst testing to ASTM F1140

The test methods within this ASTM standard include the burst test, which demonstrates the maximum burst pressure your packages can take. It gives you a solid understanding of where, why, and when they fail and shows you where weak points could compromise safety, quality, or performance.

ASTM F1140 may be tested with or without the packaged product. Packages can also be tested either open or closed.

Creep testing to ASTM F1140

The creep test maintains a specified pressure for a specified time or until the package fails. Creep testing, also referred to as cold flow, refers to how a material slowly moves or changes shape when a load is applied.

While you’re inflating your package sample you need to observe the seal. Over the testing period you note any deformations or seal breaks. Once you reach a pre-set time, or the package fails, the creep test ends.

As is the case with burst testing, you can carry out a creep test with or without a product enclosed.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM F1140 testing?

BT Integra Pack: Smart Package Tester

An innovative leak detection package testing instrument. It gives you control of your burst testing and creep testing with repeatable and quantitative results. As well as burst tests and creep tests you can also use the BT Integra to deliver incisive creep-to-failure tests and leak integrity tests.

Closed Package Test Fixture Assembly

These test fixtures help your ASTM F1140 testing of open or closed packages. The test fixtures can be used alongside the TME BT Integra-Pack Tester with flexible or porous peelable pouches.
