Introducing DIN 53380 – Industrial Physics

DIN 53380 is a global DIN international standard that guides you in best practice when testing the gas transmission rate of plastic films using the volumetric method.

DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.), a German standardization body, has developed the use, rules, guidelines and characteristics of around 30,000 testing standards.

Why is gas transmission rate testing helpful?

Plastic materials form barrier properties for food and other products that may be easily oxidized or mildewed by oxygen and water content. Gas transmission tests are performed to measure the permeation of a particular gas through the barrier materials, helping you to select the right packaging materials to protect your products.

Gas transmission testing can help to determine whether packages can keep oxygen or other gasses away from sensitive products to avoid the deterioration of their contents.

DIN 53380 gas transmission rate testing key definitions

Here are some of the common terms you’ll encounter when you are gas transmission rate testing to DIN 53380 standards.

Gas-transmission rate (GTR): the quantity of a given gas passing through a unit of the parallel surfaces of a plastic film in unit time under the conditions of test.

Gas permeability (coefficient of gas permeability): the volume of gas passing through a plastic material of unit thickness, per unit area and unit time, under unit partial-pressure difference between the two sides of the material.

We’ve learnt a thing or two about gas transmission testing over the decades. Now Industrial Physics is recognized as a brand that likes to bring new, innovative GTR testers and gas transmission testing equipment to market.

For example, we wrote this blog on the types of oxygen analyzers, their uses and functions. Then there’s this piece detailing how to protect your reputation with oxygen permeation testing, or this one that investigates the barriers to permeation testing, what can be measured…and why?
