DIN 53217 is a global DIN international standard for measuring the density of paints, varnishes and similar coating materials.
There are a number of density testing methods described in the DIN 53217 series of standards, including:
DIN 53217-2 – the pycnometer method: pycnometer testing is used for measuring and comparing densities – or specific gravities – of liquids and solids. Pycnometer bottles are typically made of glass or metal and have a ground glass stopper with a capillary tube for air bubbles to escape.
DIN 53217-4 the hydrometer method: hydrometer testing for density involves filling a standing cylinder with your sample product for analysis. As soon as it reaches equilibrium, the measured value is taken. It’s a particularly useful approach for density testing transparent fluids with a low viscosity.
