DIN 53121

Introducing DIN 53121 - Industrial Physics  

DIN 53121 is a global DIN international standard for testing the bending stiffness of paper and board using the beam method with a bending resistance tester. 

Bending stiffness is one of the most important characteristics of cartonboard. It influences the runnability properties and strength of the cartonboard from the printing press to the packaging line. 

The DIN 53121 approach to bending stiffness testing

The DIN 53121 testing approach uses the beam testing method which defines bending stiffness as the resistance against bending in the elastic area of the cartonboard. It uses a 4-point flexure test to bend a test strip to a specified angle.  

The 4-point flexure test delivers reliable stiffness values in the machine and transverse directions. This is useful for mini-flute corrugated boards, where bending stiffness plays a greater role than with standard flute heights.
