Introducing DIN 53109 – Industrial Physics

DIN 53109 is a national testing standard that helps you to evaluate the abrasion resistance of paper and board using what’s known as the ‘abrasion wheel’ method.

DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.), a German standardization body, has developed the use, rules, guidelines and characteristics of around 30,000 standards.

Wash and abrasion testers are designed to see how painted, coated or varnished surfaces deal with the kind of wear likely to be caused by washing or everyday use. Falling sand abrasion testers can measure the abrasion resistance of paint, lacquers and other organic coatings.

Why is abrasion testing important?

Scrapes and scuffs can have a massive impact on the visual appeal of a product or component. Abrasion testing to standards such as DIN 53109 is important as it can show you how your products and packaging will fare when they’re subject to wear and tear from rubbing, grinding or scraping against other materials.

Abrasion testing can be carried out on a huge number of materials, from plastics and polymers to metals or even paper and textiles

Abrasion testing technology

So, how can Industrial Physics support your abrasion testing to DIN 53109 standards?

TQC Sheen TABER Abraser 1700-1750
The Taber Abrasion from TQC Sheen is used to determine relative resistance to abrasion defined as ‘the ability of a material to withstand mechanical damage’ such as rubbing, scraping or erosion. Our trusty abrasion tester can be used in the wear and durability testing of parquet, metals, leather, textiles, rubber, lacquered surfaces, carpets and coatings.

More abrasion testing options

We make a wide range of abrasion testing wheels to suit all sorts of abrasion testing standards including the DIN 53754. These include the Taber CS 17 abrasion wheels, the Taber CS 10 wheels or our CS-10F Calibrase® Wheel Set.

In our portfolio of abrasion testing products we also have various sandpaper options, including our Taber S-42 sandpaper strips (100pcs) or our Taber S 16 specimen plates (10pc).

Talk to us about your specific requirements and we will supply the right abrasion tester products and accessories for your needs.
