ASTM G12 was a test method from ASTM International used to measure the film thickness of nonmagnetic coatings on the external surface of steel pipe, without damaging the coating. Its full title was “Standard Test Method for Nondestructive Measurement of Film Thickness of Pipeline Coatings on Steel.”
ASTM withdrew G12 in 2013 and directs users to ASTM D7091 as its replacement. If you are specifying a method for coating-thickness measurement today, ASTM D7091 is the current standard to reference. ASTM G12 set out a nondestructive way to measure the dry-film thickness of a nonmagnetic coating applied to the external surface of steel pipe. Because the coating is nonmagnetic and the pipe is steel, the method relied on a magnetic (electromagnetic) gauging principle – the same physical basis used by modern coating-thickness gauges. In a G12 measurement, a gauge is placed against the coated surface of the steel pipe. Because the coating is nonmagnetic and the substrate is magnetic steel, the instrument measures the coating thickness through the magnetic relationship between probe and substrate, without cutting into or damaging the coating. This nondestructive approach let operators check thickness repeatedly across a pipe without creating defects that would themselves need repair.
The method was self-limited to firm coatings on pipe of at least 10 mm diameter, and it excluded soft or deformable films because probe pressure on a soft coating distorts the reading. This is the kind of controlled, repeatable check that gives quality-control teams results they can act on with confidence.
