Introducing ASTM F88 - Industrial Physics  

ASTM F88 is a global ASTM international standard test method to measure the seal strength of flexible barrier materials. 

Using a peel tester this ASTM test gives you accurate seal strength testing results for both flexible and rigid flexible packaging materials. 

The ASTM F88 method measures the force required to separate a test strip of material containing the seal. On top of that, it helps you to identify how, where and why the seal failed. In many situations it’s wise to carry out additional package testing, but the main cause for failed flexible packaging tends to be seal related. 

Why seal strength testing is important?  

So, why is ensuring the integrity of a seal’s strength an important business? Well, If you work in the food industry then effective seals are vital to maintain the use by - and sell by dates - you present to your customers. Seal strength testing is even more vital in the flexible packaging that surrounds pharmaceutical products or medical devices.  

We have written extensively on the importance of creating sterile barrier systems in the medical industry here and here. You could say we’re advocates of the ASTM F88 process for maintaining a sterile packaging environment.  

When you follow the ASTM F88 approach you’ll find detailed instructions on the seal strength test procedure itself, guidance on how to maintain the right environmental conditions and how to prepare your samples.  

Using a peel tester, in essence the ASTM F88 test identifies the maximum force the specimen can endure before it fails, showing you the type of failure too.  

The ASTM F88 test is not to be confused with other similar ASTM international approaches. If you need to measure mechanical seal strength while separating an entire lid (cover/membrane) from a rigid or semi-rigid round container, then ASTM F2824 is the method for you. Or if you want to measure the bond strength or ply adhesion of laminates made from flexible materials such as cellulose, paper, plastic film, and foil…ASTM F904 is the best choice.
