ASTM F1319 is an ASTM industry standard to test the abrasion resistance and smudge resistance of images produced from business copy products using the crockmeter testing method.
The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) is one of the most influential standard bodies in existence. Established in 1898, ASTM international exists to develop standardized test methods, specifications, practices, guides, classification, and terminology across a range of subject areas.
The ASTM F1319 test method describes an abrasion testing and smudge testing procedure. It helps you to determine the amount of image transferred onto the surface of a white cloth by rubbing.
A crockmeter test, also known as a rubbing fastness test, measures how much color transfers from a material to another surface when rubbed. It’s used to evaluate the color fastness of materials like fabrics, leathers, yarns, and sewing threads. It can also be used to test the smudge and smear resistance of printed or copied images
This ASTM F1319 rubbing fastness test can be used to evaluate the amount of material removed from the sample – known as the smudge or crock. The test methods focus on determining the amount of material deposited on the crockmeter cloth or redeposited in a new location on the sample.
This smudge testing method can also be employed to measure performance characteristics for a product. You should select test equipment which is appropriate for measuring the abrasion to the samples. Your samples should be tested before and after rubbing and then you compare the results.
Other abrasion testing methods using a Sutherland rub tester, Taber Abrader and Gavarti GA-C.A.T. can also be employed to evaluate the smudge and abrasion characteristics. However, results from these methods are not necessarily equivalent to those obtained with a crockmeter.
