Introducing ASTM E8 – Industrial Physics

ASTM E8 is an ASTM industry standard that guides the tension testing of metallic materials.

The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) is one of the most influential standard bodies in existence. Established in 1898, ASTM international exists to develop standardized test methods, specifications, practices, guides, classification, and terminology across a range of subject areas.

The ASTM E8 metal testing methods cover the tension testing of metallic materials in any form at room temperature. They help you to determine the yield strength, yield point elongation, tensile strength, elongation, and reduction of area.

What are metal tension tests used for?

Tension tests provide information on the strength and ductility of materials under uniaxial tensile stresses. This information may be useful in comparisons of materials, alloy development, quality control, and design under certain circumstances.

The results of tension tests of specimens machined to standardized dimensions from selected portions of a part or material may not totally represent the strength and ductility properties of the entire end product or its in-service behavior in different environments.

These test methods are considered satisfactory for acceptance testing of commercial shipments. The test methods have been used extensively in the trade for this purpose.

Our ASTM E8 metal testing equipment

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM E8 tensile testing

United Testing Deluxe Action Wedge Grip
Made by our materials handling specialist brand United Testing, our deluxe action wedge grips are available in different sizes and selected based on your capacity requirement or your sample size. The grip jaws move up or down with a T-handle that tightens them onto your sample for a tighter grip.

United Testing A-60 Wedge Grips
Our A-60 lever action wedge grips, from United Testing, are ideal for tensile testing both flat or round steel samples, and samples made from other materials.

Masters of metal testing for over 50 years

At IP we’ve been supporting metal manufacturers and users to test their products for over half a century. From copper to steel testing, you’ll find equipment to give you the results you need. We can also test alloys, aluminum and composites – so you can make sure you have the chance to find the right material for the job.

We like to share our knowledge and, across the knowledgebase section of our website, we publish lots of blogs on related subjects. For example, why not have a look at this blog on understanding elongation and tensile strength testing? Then you could try this one on how to test aluminum cans: ensuring quality in metal packaging.
