ASTM D724 is a global ASTM standard test method to measure the resistance of paper surfaces to wetting.
Through this wetting test a drop of liquid is applied directly to the paper surface and a measurement of the angle of contact is recorded. Using the ASTM D724 approach, both the initial wettability and the rate of change of wettability may be measured.
When using a standard ink the initial contact angle, or wettability, is considered to be a measure of the ruling quality of the paper. Whereas, the rate of change of the contact angle, or wettability, is considered to be a measure of the writing quality.
You can also use a range of other aqueous and nonaqueous liquids with this technique for special applications. This includes printing inks, writing inks, adhesives, oils, and coating materials. But you may have to modify the procedure to enable this.
The ASTM D724 standard gives you information on the two types of apparatus that can be used for measuring the contact angle.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM D724 paper testing?
TQC Sheen Fibro PGX+ Pocket Goniometer
Our innovative pocket goniometer checks surface properties for contamination, adhesion and the printability of metals, polymers, glass, paper, board…and much more!
This pocket goniometer defines several surface properties for quality control. It uses a camera which can take up to 80 pictures per second. The technology allows it to measure both the static and the dynamic contact angle of the droplet.
Our goniometer provides a mini test environment and can be placed directly onto the sample surface. It can even be used to measure surface tension and surface free energy.
TQC Sheen PGX Dosing Unit PG1010
At Industrial Physics, we’ve specialized in the design and manufacture of testing instruments for pulp, paper, and packaging industries for almost 100 years and have a wealth of experience behind us.
We like to share our knowledge and across the knowledgebase section of our website, we publish lots of blogs on related subjects. For example, why not have a look at our quick guide to paper pulp evaluation? Then you could read up on sample preparation for paper testing.

Your global test and measurement partner for ASTM D724
The TQC Sheen Fibro PGX+ Pocket Goniometer is a portable, video-based instrument for measuring contact angle, surface tension and surface free energy on paper, board, coated substrates, metals, glass, solar panels and other engineered surfaces. Powered from a single USB connection and taking up to 80 frames per second, it captures both static and dynamic contact angle in one measurement - so quality, R&D and production teams can verify wettability, adhesion readiness and coating performance at the bench or in the field without sample preparation.
