Introducing ASTM D562 – Industrial Physics

ASTM D562 is a global ASTM viscosity testing method to measure the consistency of paints using a stormer-type viscometer.  

Viscosity testing is recommended for materials like inks, paints, varnishes and coatings or organic or inorganic surfaces. It can also be used to test everything from foods and beverages to chemicals or adhesives. There are a variety of different testing methods that can be used to test different kinds of samples. 

This ASTM method measures the viscosity of paints using Krebs units (KU). These are values of a scale commonly used to express the consistency of paints applied by brush or roller. 

ASTM D562 checklist

To follow the ASTM D562 method you’ll need the following items, all of which we supply: 

Stormer-type viscometer
Designed in 1909 by Edward J. Stormer, chief chemist of the Case Threshing Machine Co. of Wisconsin, the original design consisted of a falling weight that caused a component to rotate at constant speed through a viscous liquid. The viscosity testing technology has moved on a little, but the clever concept remains. 

Stopwatch
Or a suitable timer measuring to 0.2 seconds.  

Weights
A set covering the range from 5 to 1000g 

Standard oils
Calibrated in absolute viscosity, within the viscosity testing range of the coatings to be measured.

Designed and built by TQC Sheen, this modern testing machine is based on the popular traditional Krebs method, using a weight-driven rotating paddle to sense the paint viscosity at a constant 200 rpm. The torque induced is proportional to the viscosity of the sample and may be converted into viscosity or weight units.
