ASTM D4287 is a global ASTM standard viscosity testing method of measuring high-shear viscosity using a cone or plate viscometer.
It’s an ASTM standard to determine the viscosity of paints, varnishes, and related products at a rate of shear of 12,000 s-1. Viscosity testing control enables secure, repeatable and reproducible results to protect your hard-earned reputation.
The material to be tested is placed between the cone and plate of a cone/plate viscometer, then subjected to a high shear rate while the viscosity is determined. The viscosity value obtained gives information about the flow properties of the material under high-shear conditions, similar to those encountered during application by brushing, spraying, electrostatic disk, or roll coating.
This viscosity testing method is suitable for all paints and varnishes whether they are Newtonian in behavior or not. However, due to the narrow gap between the stationary and rotary parts of high-shear viscometers, ASTM D4287 is more reproducible for paints with finer pigment dispersions.
It’s worth noting that paints and varnishes that dry very rapidly may not give reproducible results with the ASTM D4287 test method. It’s also not the best test for elevated temperatures which can give poor accuracy due to loss of volatiles and to drying.
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM D4287 testing?
Our extensive range of viscosity cups and rotational viscometers help our customers to rigorously check the quality control of their products.
TQC cone and plate viscometer
A standard viscosity test for dynamic viscosity measurements. As non-Newtonian fluids exhibit different viscosities relative to the shear rate applied, the cone and plate viscometer tightly controls results to 10,000S-1 (B.S./ ISO requirements) or to 12,000S-1 (ASTM).
At Industrial Physics we like to help our customers get out of any sticky testing situation and we offer a range of free tools and advice across this website.
