Introducing ASTM D4212 - Industrial Physics
ASTM D4212 is a global ASTM international standard method for viscosity testing using dip-type viscosity cups.
Viscosity testing reveals the fluidity of a material. The data will help you to determine characteristics such as the ease of stirring, pumping, dip coating, or other flow-related properties of your inks and coatings..
This ASTM testing method will reveal the viscosity of all types of coatings, including paints, varnishes, lacquers, inks and related liquid materials.
The dip-type viscosity cup is a firm favorite for viscosity testing to ASTM standards because they are robust and simple to use and they can be used in tanks, reservoirs, and reactors.
The ASTM D4212 viscosity testing
ASTM D4212 is recommended for viscosity testing and control within one plant or laboratory. It’s important that it’s used to check compliance with specifications only when sufficient controls have been instituted. This will ensure adequate comparability of your viscosity testing results.
Viscosity testing cups are designed for testing of Newtonian and near-Newtonian liquids. If you want to undertake viscosity testing with non-Newtonian materials, such as shear-thinning or thixotropic samples, it’s more appropriate to work towards another ASTM standard test method, such as ASTM D2196.
With the right controlled conditions, comparing the viscosity of non-newtonian materials can be helpful, but viscosity testing methods - using controlled shear rate or shear stress - are typically preferred.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM D4212 testing?
The Sheen viscosity cup ASTM D4212 immersion zahn is a range of stainless steel (SS303) viscosity cups made with a fixed stainless steel inner cavity, nozzle and handle.
They’re ideal for viscosity testing coatings and other fluids during application or production.
