Introducing ASTM D3265 – Industrial Physics

ASTM D3265 is an ASTM international standard method to inspect the tint strength of commercial rubber grade carbon blacks.

Most rubber compounds use carbon black as a filler whether it’s used in the automotive industry for tires or the medical industry for making gloves. It strengthens the rubber and improves the physical characteristics while increasing volume and bolstering the vulcanization process.

Tint strength can be used as an indication of particle size but it’s also dependent on structure and aggregate size distribution. So differences in tint strength within grades of carbon black may reflect differences other than particle size.

The ASTM D3265 test method was primarily developed to characterize the N100, N200, and N300 series of carbon blacks. Tint strength values within the carbon black industry were developed using an automatic muller apparatus which prepares carbon black-zinc oxide pastes.
